Tagged even though the linked pages have CC BY 4.0 licenses

[edit]

Hello, I'm very confused by why these two images (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ZeldaVylet.jpg and https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fish_whisperer.jpg) were tagged as lacking permission. The files were taken directly from Vylet Pony's wiki pages that they own, so I'm not sure why this requires further evidence of permission. Thank you for your time GregariousMadness (talk) 22:19, 25 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

It is common practice that we need more verification when someone uploads album covers and similar to Commons, even when the person who uploaded them is the musician themselves
All you have to do is to get Vylet Pony to send an email to commons-copyvio@wikimedia.org and have her confirm that all images listed on her Wiki are released under the CC BY 4.0 license. Trade (talk) 23:38, 25 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
This doesn't make sense to me. Their own site, listed as source, is clear about the license. How will VRT make that any clearer? - Jmabel ! talk 00:23, 26 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
We dont know if he's the album cover artist. VRT would help clear this up Trade (talk) 00:39, 26 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Jmabel: @Trade: The problem is that it's quite difficult to contact Vylet Pony themselves... I'm really not sure why the license on their own website isn't sufficient here. They did not create the album artwork, but it belongs to them as they own the rights to the album and everything on it. GregariousMadness (talk) 08:12, 30 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

Re: "with red eyes"

[edit]

I'm sorry, but I'm not understanding the point of the microcategories when the parent gallery is already small. This is just compartmentalizing things to make the categories harder to navigate for users. The category structure on here is already a mess in regards to the cosplay section. Kung Fu Man (talk) 13:48, 27 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

Just because an character have "special" eye color it does not mean that all the cosplayers use colored contact lenses Trade (talk) 13:55, 27 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
That's not so much the point I'm making Trade, I'm saying doing the character separation in this manner is making the galleries harder to get the proper scope of and adding unnecessary splitting up. Something like "cosplays with red eyes" or similar would work a lot better without disrupting the parent, no?--Kung Fu Man (talk) 13:56, 27 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
That only makes it harder to find red eyed cosplay of an specific character Trade (talk) 14:03, 27 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
Again, I feel this is a level of excessiveness. We may as well argue there should be a subcat for Ayane in swimwear, or Reaper without a mask, because "someone may be looking for those". There's a point where "Keep It Simple, Stupid" should apply. D.Va's category mess already shows how out of control that can get as is. There's a reason english user wikipedia editors in the Video Game project complain about the mess that is a lot of the commons categories.--Kung Fu Man (talk) 14:13, 27 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
Are we not gonna discuss the fact that you marked the categories empty despite it very clearly not being the case? Gives an impression that you cannot be trusted with using the SD template Trade (talk) 14:29, 27 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
I'm trying to discuss this subject with you, assume good faith. Some categories you've created, such as "Cosplay of Jubilee and Akuma", are literally just...one image. Trying to use bureaucracy isn't going to change that. At least consider my argument.--Kung Fu Man (talk) 14:48, 27 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

Re: careless dog mass catting

[edit]

1. Back in March 2024 or so, you seem to have moved every image from "Puppies" to "Unidentified puppies". A large portion of these images were in breed categories already, and a good bunch had the breed in the file name. Please do not do such indiscriminate copies/moves in the future. It is not helpful if many of those changes are unneeded and wrong.

2. Around that same time, you copied many images from "Korean Jindo" to "Mixed breed dogs" without any sort of explanation in the Cat-a-lot custom edit reason. While at least one individual dog (the dark red "Cisco") is identified as a NOID East Asian type Spitz at source, this type of edit affected many other images too, and I fail to see any thoroughline in here. Please explain?

Question

[edit]

Hi. I was wondering what you think of Category:Artists by record label since it's similar to the other categories that you've done CfDs for. Anyway, It seems to be meaningless trivia like the other categories but I'm not sure if I want to do a CfD for it or not. So do you have any opinion about it? Adamant1 (talk) 06:04, 4 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

How is record label any less relevant for musicians than genre
Might wanna adress that if you wanna DR Trade (talk) 09:11, 4 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
(talk page stalker) I think it's useful. But, also, Many record labels are rather strongly associated with a style of music (SubPop, Daptone, Okeh) and/or with being a major figure (Deutsche Gramofon, Arista). Also, there is not much risk of cycles (other than the rare cases where a musical artist founds a record label). - Jmabel ! talk 17:33, 4 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Jmabel: That's fair. It would be cool if there was at least some kind of standard though so categories like Category:Hot Water Music don't just get spammed with "artist by record label" parent cats regardless if there's actually media related to them or not. 99% of those categories would be totally pointless as parents if we were sticking to the idea that subcats should contain media related to the parents. --Adamant1 (talk) 22:27, 4 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hi, your Module:Category series navigation in line 1894 calls Module:ConvertNumeric and it's "english_to_ordinal" function. Now that module does not have such function, which is causing issues at Template:Navseasoncats. Can you fix it, or should we just delete unused templates and modules. Container cat template

[edit]

Hi, Trade. I noticed this change you made, part of which added {{Container category}}. That template redirects to Template:CatCat. However, Category:Animated television series by topic is actually a metacat, so it should have the {{MetaCat}} template instead.

I fixed that one, as well as other metacats that used either {{Container cat}} or {{Container category}}. Please be careful about that. Thanks. -- Auntof6 (talk) 20:42, 12 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hi. I saw that you used this template again where it should have been the MetaCat template. It saw it on these three categories:
I replaced the container template with the correct one, so you can see what's needed. Please use the correct template from now on. Thanks.
And in case you were wondering, I saw this because I watch Category:Categories requiring permanent diffusion to zero. --Auntof6 (talk) 21:22, 17 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
Any advice how i can keep it in mind so i dont forget about it? Trade (talk) 21:24, 17 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
(talk page stalker) As I understand it, the key question to ask here is:
But I'll confess to sometimes being confused myself. @Auntof6: I see you changed Category:Categories of Ukraine by region from metacat to catcat. That was 7 years ago, so I'm not sure you even would do the same now, but if you think that was correct, can you tell me what I'm missing? - Jmabel ! talk 23:50, 17 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
I really wish the names of templates used were consistent between Commons and ENWP. Would make things easier Trade (talk) 23:52, 17 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Jmabel: Sure, and I would do the same now.
Most categories (maybe all, but I haven't checked) whose names start with "Categories of" are not metacats. In a metacat, subcats are grouped by something named in the metacat's own name. For example:
Rivers by country
Rivers of Afghanistan
Rivers of Belarus
etc.
Note that the metacat name includes "by country", and each subcat's name specifies a different country.
To be a metacat, your example category would need a structure like this:
Categories of Ukraine by region
Categories of Kyiv
Art of Kyiv
Geography of Kyiv
Categories of Lviv Oblast
Politics of Lviv Oblast
Society of Lviv Oblast
etc.
Here the metacat name includes "by region" and each subcat's name specifies a different region. (Category:Categories of regions of Ukraine pretty much has that kind of content, it's just not named/defined as a metacat.)
However, that's not what's in Category:Categories of Ukraine by region. The subcats there are categories of Ukraine that have "by region" in their name -- "Aircraft in Ukraine by region", "Potted plants in Ukraine by region", etc. Those are things grouped by region, but Category:Categories of Ukraine by region is not grouped by region.
I hope that makes sense. -- Auntof6 (talk) 02:31, 18 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Jmabel: One further note. In some cases, what makes a category a metacat depends on what's in it. My favorite example is the various "by name" categories we have. To be a metacat, a "by name" category would need to group things that have the same name. Most of them don't, for example Category:People by name. One that does is Category:Hotels by name, where each subcat is for any and all hotels that have the indicated name. -- Auntof6 (talk) 02:38, 18 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
Read what I replied above to see if that helps. Feel free to ask more if you want. I have half a mind to propose eliminating the container templates to avoid this confusion. -- Auntof6 (talk) 02:32, 18 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

This got me looking at Category:Attacks in Asia by country. Trade, why Category:Attacks in Algeria ("in Asia"???)? And the other two categories here are each long, multi-category chains leading down to Category:June 2025 Israeli airstrikes on residential buildings in Iran, which is the only thing here that actually contains any files. What's the point of this much structure for this little content? - Jmabel ! talk 03:53, 18 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
